Congress does nothing actually did something.Hartford
Courant article by Lisa Chedekel and Matthew Kauffman said leaders of
Congress have signed a bill Friday "that would require the US military
to develop mental health screening for combat troops and establish clear
rules mental aptitude for deployment in war zones. "The fact that this situation went down into legislation is worrying to say the least. Mentally
unfit soldiers were sent directly to the second and third tours of duty
in Iraq, with disastrous consequences, including suicide.
The law stipulates that more through review of mental health should take place before service members are fit for deployment.
Standards
should be set to determine whether a service member must be returned
for a mental health examination, as listed by the legislation under the
current. The law also says that minimum standards of mental health should be developed for sending troops into battle. The
legislation was an amendment that was attached to the defense
authorization form approved by a conference committee of members of the
House and Senate. It was a piece of legislation that the penalty is added an attachment, instead of the usual diet of pork Washington. This
report on the lack of supervision in relation to mental health of
American soldiers in a series of special report entitled "mentally
incapacitated forced to fight."
The
newspaper reported that, according to records of the Department of
Defense, troops under 1-300 that were deployed were referred for
evaluations.
The army acknowledged in studies over 9 percent of deploying troops
had serious psychiatric problems, according to the Courant, but only 0.3
percent of all deployed 300 troops were referred for evaluations. Some soldiers were sent to Iraq despite suffering from PTSD or PTSD. Some soldiers even have maintained the struggle without the advice of their mental health.
The Courant reported that the Comptroller General of the United States
should assess whether the military after the new law and report to
Congress in early 2008 under the new legislation.Although
the law is certainly a step in the right direction, to be applied
immediately, regardless of whether it is election season.
